Reading and Writing
In the last 3 chapter we talked about writing in content areas and the relationship between reading and writing. We discussed the steps used to approach a writing prompt, and things to think about when evaluating. We want our students to learn how to be fluent writers. The writing process is divided into several steps. Prewriting is used for selecting a topic and determining your target audience. This is where you start to organize your thoughts. Your drafts is where you put your ideas on paper without thoughts of grammatical errors or neatness. Revision is when you reread you piece and reorganize your thoughts. This helps you make sure that your thoughts are coming across clearly. It is also the time to think about sentence structure and vocabulary. Editing includes checking for grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Its the stage to polish your writing. Publishing is the final step. Students work can be shared orally, posted in classrooms or turned in for final grades. Its your final product that you're ready to share with the world. Reading and writing are both functional activities that can be used to accomplish a specific task. They use the same skills, knowledge and processes when comprehending and writing text. If we can take advantage of how they overlap we can build both skills together.
Congratulations for creating a blog page. Your blog page is lovely and well organized. Share your links to friends and keep using it, modify, and share your thoughts on literacy issues with friends and colleagues.
ReplyDeleteGreat reflection on literacy across content areas. As a teacher, it is always important to understand what happens during the reading process, socially, emotionally, and cognitively. Understanding the literacy demands that secondary school students face every day is necessary to better meet their needs. Most importantly, is to recognize the faulty assumptions about developing literacy in secondary school. I love your reflection and continue to explore and expand the research on best practices in teaching reading in secondary schools.
